Werewolf by Night #5

Werewolf by Night #5 was published in May 1973 as part of Marvel Comics' mid-1970s expansion into horror-themed storytelling. This period saw the publisher push the boundaries of the Comics Code Authority, which had recently relaxed its restrictions on supernatural figures like vampires and werewolves. The issue follows the series protagonist Jack Russell as he navigates his dual life, reflecting the decade's broader interest in gothic narratives and anti-hero protagonists within the comic book medium.

The issue features artwork by Mike Ploog, a defining artist of the series whose atmospheric, moody pencil work was instrumental in establishing the character's visual identity. Ploog’s style, characterized by gritty detail and dynamic, shadow-heavy panels, was highly regarded for capturing the internal struggle of Russell. The title was part of a wave of Marvel horror comics that garnered a dedicated cult following, praised by readers for its departure from standard superhero tropes in favor of darker, character-driven tension.
