What's with the Bag, Kamiyama-san? #1

What's with the Bag, Kamiyama-san? #1 is the inaugural chapter of the manga series written and illustrated by mangaka Tsugumi Oda. Originally serialized within the pages of Weekly Shonen Champion, the story introduces the titular Kamiyama, a character characterized by the mysterious and constant presence of a paper bag over their head. Oda’s work explores themes of social anxiety and personal identity, using the surreal visual motif of the bag to navigate the everyday challenges of high school life.

The series emerged from a contemporary landscape of slice-of-life manga that experiment with absurdist premises to ground emotional vulnerability. Oda’s illustrative style emphasizes expressive character silhouettes and subtle environmental storytelling to compensate for the obscured facial features of the protagonist. Upon its release, the first issue was noted for its balance of quirky humor and empathetic character development, establishing a distinct tone that resonated with readers looking for unconventional narratives in the medium.
