Where it came from
Wolf & Red #1 was released in 1995 as part of the short-lived Dancing Elephant Press imprint, a division of the larger Antarctic Press. Created by writer and artist Bill Maus, the series was designed as a dark, stylized reimagining of the Little Red Riding Hood fable, transplanting the classic fairy tale tropes into a gritty, adult-oriented comic book aesthetic common to the independent press movement of the mid-1990s.
The visual design of the series reflects the popular 'bad girl' art style prevalent at the time, characterized by exaggerated proportions and high-contrast, moody illustrations. While the title captured a niche audience interested in dark fantasy and modern fairy tale deconstructions, it remains a quintessential example of the independent comic boom, noted more for its distinct stylistic choices and bold character designs than for broad critical reception.
