Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #4

Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #4, released in 1994, serves as the concluding chapter of a storyline integrated into the Wolverine ongoing series during a period of high intensity for the character at Marvel Comics. This narrative arc was designed to provide a definitive exploration of Wolverine’s origins within the Weapon X program, delving into the traumatic conditioning and the elusive nature of his past. The story was written and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith, whose highly detailed, distinctively ink-heavy aesthetic brought a visceral, almost clinical horror to the laboratory setting of the Weapon X facility.

Windsor-Smith’s work on this series is frequently cited by critics and fans for its departure from traditional superhero art styles, favoring a slow-burn psychological tension over standard action tropes. His approach aimed to strip away the mystique of Wolverine’s cybernetic enhancements, focusing instead on the cold, sterile dehumanization of the subject. The series received significant acclaim upon release for its masterful control of pacing and its unflinching look at the character's origins, solidifying its reputation as a seminal piece of modern Wolverine lore.
