X-Factor #81

Published in August 1992, X-Factor #81 was a pivotal chapter in the series, emerging during a period of significant creative transition for Marvel's mutant titles. The issue was written by Peter David, who was instrumental in redefining the team as a government-sanctioned mutant task force, moving away from the original premise to focus on character-driven psychological narratives and dark humor. This specific era is often cited by fans and critics as a high point for the title due to David's nuanced approach to the roster.

The interior artwork was provided by Larry Stroman, whose distinct, angular, and highly expressive style became the signature look of this run. His visual storytelling emphasized dynamic movement and unconventional panel layouts, which aligned with the gritty and bureaucratic tone of the government-sponsored team. The cover, featuring the mutant team in a stark, illustrative style, was well-received by readers who appreciated the departure from the more traditional superhero house styles of the early 1990s.
