X-Men #16

Published in January 1966, X-Men #16 represents the middle tenure of the original series created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. At this point in the title's history, the team was still developing its identity under the creative stewardship of writer Roy Thomas and artist Werner Roth, who took over illustration duties under the pseudonym Jay Gavin. The issue is notable for continuing the struggle of the X-Men against the Sentinels, a significant narrative arc that introduced the theme of mutant-versus-machine prejudice, which would become a cornerstone of the franchise's social commentary.

The issue features a cover by Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott that emphasizes the high-stakes action characteristic of the Silver Age Marvel style. During this period, the X-Men title was struggling to maintain the same level of popularity as other Marvel flagship books like The Fantastic Four or The Amazing Spider-Man. While it was well-received by a core group of readers, the series would eventually face cancellation before being successfully reimagined in the 1970s. The issue remains a classic example of the transition period between the series' inception and its eventual cultural renaissance.
