X-Men #17

Published in February 1966, X-Men #17 serves as a notable installment in the original Silver Age run created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. At this stage in the series, the book was actively building out the internal mythology of the mutant team, focusing on the team's ongoing struggle for acceptance while battling increasingly complex adversaries. This issue is particularly remembered for the artistic contribution of Werner Roth, who took over the interior pencils under the pseudonym Jay Gavin, bringing a distinct, more refined aesthetic to the characters compared to earlier Kirby-led installments.

The narrative of this issue reflects the mid-sixties creative environment at Marvel, where writers often balanced serialized character development with standalone villain-of-the-month encounters. By this point, the X-Men were establishing themselves as a cornerstone of the burgeoning Marvel Universe, distinct from the Fantastic Four or the Avengers due to their status as social outcasts. The design and storytelling direction reflected Lee's goal of humanizing superhuman characters, an approach that resonated with readers of the era and helped solidify the title's long-term legacy despite the title's modest sales figures during the mid-1960s.
