X-Statix #18

X-Statix #18, released in 2004, serves as the final issue of the series created by writer Peter Milligan and artist Mike Allred. Born out of the earlier X-Force title, the series was reimagined by the creative team to focus on a group of cynical, media-obsessed mutants who prioritized fame and public perception over traditional superhero ethics. This specific issue concluded the 'Death of the Girl' story arc, marking the end of a satirical run that pushed the boundaries of Marvel's typical house style.

The design of the series, particularly the distinct pop-art aesthetic provided by Allred, was intentionally retro and vibrant, contrasting sharply with the gritty realism common in contemporary comics of the early 2000s. Milligan and Allred sought to deconstruct the celebrity culture surrounding the mutant population, with issue 18 providing a definitive, somewhat bittersweet conclusion to the team's media-centric existence. It was widely praised by critics for its bold visual style and its willingness to subvert reader expectations regarding character mortality.
