X-Statix #14

X-Statix #14, published in 2003, serves as a pivotal and controversial chapter in the series created by writer Peter Milligan and artist Mike Allred. The issue is famous for its satirical and meta-textual approach to superhero fame, centering on the character Henrietta Hunter, a deceased pop star resurrected by the team. The narrative specifically critiques the media's voyeuristic fascination with tragedy, using the medium of the comic book to mirror the celebrity culture of the early 2000s.

The visual aesthetic was driven by Mike Allred’s signature pop-art influenced style, which provided a sharp, vibrant contrast to the grim and cynical subject matter of the story. By juxtaposing bright, retro-inspired illustrations with the dark, often shocking plot developments involving the death of characters, Milligan and Allred successfully positioned X-Statix as a cult classic. At the time of its release, the issue drew significant attention for its irreverent tone and its departure from traditional Marvel storytelling norms, solidifying its reputation as a biting social commentary.
