Where it came from
Released in 1999 by Topps Comics, The Orpheus Trilogy #1 serves as the opening chapter of a limited series based on the popular television program Xena: Warrior Princess. The comic was produced during the height of the show's cultural influence, aiming to expand upon the mythos of the lead character by placing her in darker, more surreal narratives that pushed the boundaries of the episodic television format.
The issue was illustrated by artists including Al Rio, who brought a stylized, high-contrast aesthetic to the characters, aligning with the visual language prevalent in late 1990s comic book illustration. The series was generally well-received by the show's dedicated fanbase for its commitment to the established personality of the protagonist and its willingness to lean into the more fantastical elements of Greek mythology.
