Xombi #2

Xombi #2 was published in 1994 as part of the initial wave of titles from Milestone Media, a comic book company founded by a collective of African-American writers and artists. The series was created by John Rozum and Denys Cowan to provide a more inclusive and diverse landscape within the superhero genre. The story centers on David Kim, a scientist who becomes a 'xombi'—a person granted immortality and resilience through nanotechnology—thrust into a world of complex urban mythology and supernatural threats.

The visual identity of the series, defined by the work of artists like Denys Cowan and Derec Donovan, was intended to bridge the gap between traditional superhero aesthetics and a grittier, experimental tone. The second issue continued to establish the unique 'Dakotaverse' setting, earning praise from critics for its sophisticated narrative structure and its ambitious blend of science fiction and horror elements. It remains a hallmark of the 1990s independent comic movement, lauded for its creative vision and cultural significance.
