Xombi #0

Xombi #0 was released in 1994 as part of the Milestone Media imprint, a boutique line within DC Comics founded by a collective of Black writers and artists. The series, created by John Rozum and artist Denys Cowan, emerged from a desire to address the lack of diversity in mainstream superhero narratives. Issue #0 was designed as a zero-issue introduction intended to bridge the gap between the character's mysterious origin and the ongoing narrative, establishing the tone of the series as a unique blend of urban gothic, horror, and science fiction.

The visual identity of Xombi was heavily influenced by Denys Cowan's gritty, atmospheric aesthetic, which aimed to distinguish the title from the standard superhero fare of the era. The character, David Kim, represented an exploration of immortality and cultural identity that resonated with readers seeking experimental storytelling. While Milestone faced the typical challenges of independent imprints in a fluctuating market, the Xombi series earned a dedicated cult following for its narrative complexity and its role in diversifying the comic book landscape.
