Yakuza Zen #1

Yakuza Zen #1 was published in 2007 by Com.X, emerging during a period of increased interest in blending stylized noir aesthetics with supernatural or unconventional genre tropes in independent comics. The series was written by Stu Perrins and illustrated by Mike Hawthorne, whose work on the title helped define its gritty, visceral tone. The creative team aimed to explore the intersection of the criminal underworld and monastic discipline, drawing heavy inspiration from classic grindhouse cinema and Japanese yakuza films to create a distinct visual and narrative identity.

The comic was generally received as a niche cult title, appreciated for its bold, high-contrast art style and its willingness to lean into hyper-stylized violence. It represented part of a broader wave of creator-owned titles that sought to push the boundaries of traditional comic storytelling by prioritizing atmosphere and thematic experimentation over standard superhero tropes. Its legacy remains tied to the early career of Mike Hawthorne, who would later gain significant recognition for his influential work on series such as Deadpool.
