Yamada & Kase-san #1

Yamada & Kase-san, originally titled Kase-san and Morning Glories, debuted in 2010 within the Japanese manga magazine Hirari. Created by mangaka Hiromi Takashima, the series was conceived as a lighthearted, slice-of-life exploration of a developing romance between two high school students with contrasting personalities. It emerged during a period when the yuri genre was seeing a shift toward more grounded, gentle storytelling, moving away from purely dramatic or tragic tropes to focus on the nuances of adolescent intimacy and personal growth.

The aesthetic of the series is defined by Takashima’s clean, expressive linework and an emphasis on visual storytelling through small, intimate gestures. The design and pacing were praised upon release for their sincerity and ability to capture the quiet excitement of a new relationship. As the first volume of the Kase-san sequence, this issue established the central dynamic between the shy, gardening-loving Yamada and the athletic, outgoing Kase, eventually leading to its recognition as a modern staple of the genre and inspiring a subsequent animated OVA adaptation.
