Where it came from
Yamada to Kase-san. #1 was first published in 2010 within the Japanese manga magazine Hirari, a publication dedicated to yuri-themed stories. Created by the manga artist Hiromi Takashima, the series explores the gentle, budding romance between the shy, gardening-loving Yui Yamada and the athletic, popular Tomoka Kase. This inaugural volume established the series' signature soft art style and its grounded, sentimental approach to high school relationships.
Takashima aimed to focus on the nuances of emotional intimacy and the quiet moments between the two protagonists, deliberately avoiding excessive drama in favor of a slice-of-life aesthetic. The design and narrative tone were well-received by readers for their warmth and sincerity, helping the series gain enough popularity to evolve into a long-running franchise that eventually saw a television animation adaptation.
