Where it came from
Yāoguài Qūgōngsuǒ, or The Monster Maintenance Office, emerged from the vibrant landscape of contemporary Chinese manhua, aiming to blend traditional folklore with modern bureaucratic fantasy. The series was conceptualized to provide a humorous and satirical take on the roles of supernatural entities within a structured, everyday urban environment. Issue #2 continues the narrative arc established in the series debut, further exploring the administrative challenges of managing entities rooted in ancient mythology in a contemporary setting.
The character design and visual style are hallmark features of the series, characterized by clean, expressive linework that emphasizes the eccentric personalities of the monsters. The creators leaned into a contrast between mundane office aesthetics and fantastical monster designs, a stylistic choice intended to ground the supernatural in relatable, humdrum reality. The series has generally been received as a refreshing entry in the genre, appreciated by readers for its witty dialogue and the clever integration of yāoguài lore into a relatable workplace comedy format.
