Where it came from
Yosemite Sam #49 was published in the late 1970s as part of the long-running Gold Key Comics series featuring the boisterous Looney Tunes prospector. This era of publication reflected the transition of classic animation icons into the mass-market comic book format, designed primarily for newsstand distribution and younger audiences who sought extensions of the Saturday morning cartoon experience.
The character of Yosemite Sam was originally created by Friz Freleng for Warner Bros. animation, and his comic adaptations aimed to capture the same frenetic, explosive energy of his short-form film appearances. The artwork of this period typically followed the house style established by Western Publishing, focusing on clear, accessible line work and slapstick visual gags that leaned heavily into the character's signature temper and penchant for six-shooters.
