Yosemite Sam #61

Yosemite Sam #61 was published by Gold Key Comics, an imprint that maintained a significant presence in the mid-century market by licensing popular animation properties. Produced during an era when Western-themed humor remained a staple of comic book shelves, this issue capitalized on the enduring appeal of the hot-tempered prospector created by Friz Freleng and Michael Maltese for the Looney Tunes shorts. The series provided a venue for stories that translated the high-energy, slapstick dynamics of animated shorts into a serialized print format, appealing primarily to younger readers who enjoyed the character's signature bombast and recurring rivalries.

The creative direction of the Gold Key Yosemite Sam line typically prioritized accessibility and character consistency, mirroring the visual shorthand established by the Warner Bros. animation studios. While the writing and illustrative teams often rotated through the studio system of the period, the design language remained grounded in the classic aesthetic of the character's original theatrical appearances. These issues were received as lighthearted staples of the newsstand era, valued more for their consistency and nostalgic value than for structural innovation in the comics medium.
