Young Romance #136

Young Romance #136, published by DC Comics in 1965, arrived during a period when the romance comic genre was transitioning away from the melodramatic archetypes of the 1950s toward more contemporary, relatable narratives. As a flagship title of the genre, the series maintained its relevance by blending traditional heart-tugging storylines with the evolving visual aesthetics of the mid-1960s, reflecting the changing social mores of its young adult readership.

The issue features the contributions of veteran romance artists and writers who were instrumental in defining the DC romance house style. These creators focused on high-emotion, illustrative storytelling that prioritized facial expressions and suburban settings to ground the fantastical notions of love in a realistic framework. While these issues were primarily designed as inexpensive, disposable newsstand fare, they are now regarded as important snapshots of the mid-century intersection between adolescent idealism and commercial comic art.
