Yowamushi Pedal #98

Yowamushi Pedal, authored and illustrated by Wataru Watanabe, began its serialization in Weekly Shonen Champion in 2008. The series follows Sakamichi Onoda, an otaku who joins his high school's competitive cycling club, blending traditional sports manga tropes with a deep technical focus on road racing. Chapter 98 falls within the early stages of the Inter-High arc, a pivotal storyline where the narrative shifts from individual club dynamics to high-stakes collegiate-level racing, establishing the series as a seminal work in the sports subgenre.

Watanabe’s design philosophy for the series emphasizes the psychological endurance of the athletes, often utilizing dynamic, kinetic line work to capture the intensity of mountain climbing and peloton maneuvering. By the time chapter 98 was published, the series had gained critical acclaim for its ability to transform the relatively niche sport of competitive cycling into an accessible and character-driven drama. The artwork from this period helped solidify the visual language that would eventually define the franchise's successful transition into animation and stage plays.
