Zebra #7

Zebra was a short-lived independent comics anthology series that emerged during the alternative press movement of the late 1980s. Created to provide a platform for experimental narratives and underground illustrators, the series functioned as a curated space for creators to deviate from traditional genre tropes. Issue #7 represents a mid-run entry, embodying the series' commitment to surrealist storytelling and non-linear graphic design, which was typical of the era's push toward 'art comics' as a legitimate medium for adult discourse.

The editorial direction for Zebra #7 focused on blending high-contrast black-and-white ink work with abstract panel layouts. The contributors aimed to disrupt the standard reader experience, often prioritizing mood and atmosphere over cohesive plot progression. While the series did not reach mass-market status, it garnered a dedicated following among collectors of fringe press publications and is recognized today as a modest but distinct artifact of the independent zine culture that thrived before the widespread digitalization of independent media.
