Where it came from
Bulbasaur made its debut as the inaugural piece in the Pop! Games: Pokémon series, assigned the number 01. Released as part of Funko's massive expansion into the video game demographic, the design remains faithful to Ken Sugimori's original character art, emphasizing the creature's signature bulb and quadrupedal stance. This figure established the aesthetic template for the long-running Pokémon line, prioritizing simplified, recognizable features while adhering to the standard vinyl construction that defines the Pop! brand.
The figure was produced to capitalize on the enduring cultural footprint of the original 1996 Game Boy titles, Pokémon Red and Green. By selecting Bulbasaur as the first entry, Funko leaned into the nostalgia of the original starter trio, positioning the figure as a cornerstone for collectors of gaming memorabilia. Upon release, the item was received as a definitive entry-level collectible for Pokémon enthusiasts, noted primarily for its accessibility and its place at the beginning of a significant and highly successful production run.
