Cap'n Crunch

Cap'n Crunch first appeared as a breakfast cereal mascot in 1963, created by the advertising agency Dancer Fitzgerald Sample. The character, Horatio Magellan Crunch, was designed by Jay Ward, the legendary animator also responsible for The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. The goal was to establish a whimsical, seafaring authority figure who could help market the sweetened corn and oat cereal to children, and the design remains one of the most recognizable icons in American grocery history.

The Funko Pop! Ad Icons series, which includes figure number 95, was launched to celebrate the cultural legacy of corporate mascots and advertising characters. This particular release pays homage to the classic naval uniform and prominent eyebrows of the Captain. By immortalizing the mascot in the signature oversized-head aesthetic of the Pop! line, Funko aimed to tap into the nostalgia of long-time consumers who grew up seeing the character on cereal boxes and in television commercials throughout the late 20th century.
