Where it came from
Released as part of the Funko Pop! Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 40th Anniversary collection, this Chewbacca figure commemorates the 1980 sequel that remains a landmark in science fiction cinema. The line was designed to celebrate the film's milestone anniversary, featuring characters rendered in the distinct stylized vinyl aesthetic that has become synonymous with the brand's expansive reach into pop culture fandom.
The figure draws inspiration from the classic character design established by Lucasfilm, emphasizing Chewbacca's iconic bandolier and Wookiee features. Like other entries in the 40th-anniversary series, the design aims to balance the modern Funko aesthetic with visual cues that evoke nostalgia for the original trilogy's promotional art and character profiles, and it was received by the collecting community as a accessible way to honor the legacy of the film.
