Where it came from
The Freddy Funko as Upside Down Will figure was created as an exclusive for San Diego Comic-Con in 2017. It represents a mash-up between Funko's corporate mascot, Freddy Funko, and the character Will Byers from the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. The design features Freddy wearing the iconic red vest and striped shirt associated with Will, placed inside a transparent plastic casing intended to mimic the eerie, translucent atmosphere of the show’s parallel dimension known as the Upside Down.
This collectible was released during the height of the Stranger Things cultural phenomenon, reflecting Funko’s strategy of blending its mascot with popular intellectual properties to drive engagement at major pop culture conventions. The figure was designed to appeal to both dedicated Funko collectors and fans of the series, drawing on the visual language of the show to create a novelty aesthetic that emphasizes the whimsical nature of the Freddy Funko line.
