Where it came from
The Funko Pop! figure of Grogu, depicted as a giant balloon from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, was released as part of the Star Wars collection to commemorate the character's 2021 appearance in the annual New York City tradition. Following the massive popularity of the character from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, Macy's commissioned a 41-foot-tall balloon version of the child, known as 'The Child' or Grogu, to float through the Manhattan streets, bridging the gap between high-end commercial branding and pop-culture phenomenon.
The figure design mirrors the proportions and whimsical aesthetic of the oversized parade balloon rather than the character's live-action appearance. Funko designers emphasized the glossy finish and tethered look of the balloon to capture the specific experience of seeing the character in the parade, which was widely praised by fans as a high-water mark for the integration of modern streaming icons into historical public celebrations.
