Where it came from
The Major Motoko Kusanagi Pop! figure was released as part of the Funko Pop! Movies line to coincide with the 2017 live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. The character originates from Masamune Shirow's seminal 1989 manga, which later gained global prominence through Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 animated film. This specific figure captures the Major in her tactical attire, drawing directly from the aesthetic choices established in the Hollywood production directed by Rupert Sanders.
Funko’s design team leaned into the clean, stylized proportions typical of the Pop! brand while attempting to replicate the sleek, futuristic tech-wear worn by the character in the film. The figure serves as a piece of merchandise that bridges the gap between the franchise's deep roots in Japanese cyberpunk and the mainstream marketing push associated with the live-action release. While the film itself met with mixed critical reception, the figure remains a recognizable representation of one of anime's most iconic protagonists.
