Where it came from
ME-809 was released as part of the Funko Pop! Star Wars line under the 113th number designation to coincide with the 2015 theatrical release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This droid character appears briefly in the film within the bustling environment of Maz Kanata's castle on Takodana. The figure is modeled after the industrial, weathered aesthetic typical of background droids in the Star Wars universe, emphasizing Funko’s signature stylized, oversized-head design approach.
The design process for this figure followed Funko's standardized development cycle for the Star Wars license, which focuses on translating minor background characters into the recognizable chibi-inspired vinyl format. As a minor character from the sequel trilogy, the figure was primarily marketed toward completionist collectors of the Star Wars Pop! series. Upon its release, it was received as a niche addition to the expansive collection of droids produced by Funko, serving as a functional representation of the film's expanded background cast.
