Where it came from
The Medium Invader Pop! vinyl figure, numbered 33 in the Funko Pop! 8-Bit series, was released to celebrate the legacy of Taito’s iconic 1978 arcade game, Space Invaders. The series was designed to translate the blocky, pixelated aesthetic of early video game graphics into the three-dimensional, stylized form of Funko’s signature vinyl figures. By utilizing a rigid, cubic structure, the design team aimed to pay homage to the original cathode-ray tube visuals that defined the dawn of the golden age of arcade gaming.
Upon its release, the figure was received primarily as a nostalgia-driven collectible for enthusiasts of retrogaming and pop culture memorabilia. The choice to render the alien invader in a flat, 8-bit style rather than the traditional rounded Pop! design served as a deliberate stylistic departure, intended to evoke the mechanical, repetitive nature of the source material. It remains a recognizable artifact of Funko’s efforts to bridge the gap between classic digital history and modern toy culture.
