Where it came from
Mermaidman, a central character in the SpongeBob SquarePants television series, was immortalized in Funko's Pop! Animation line as figure number 834. Released as a shared exclusive for the 2020 New York Comic Con, the figure captures the character's signature aging superhero aesthetic, complete with his iconic seashell bra, green gloves, and utility belt. The design was intended to evoke the nostalgic, slightly absurd charm of the undersea crime-fighter who served as a primary inspiration to SpongeBob and Patrick.
This specific Pop! figure was released during a period when Funko was aggressively expanding its SpongeBob catalog to include secondary characters beyond the core cast. As a convention exclusive, the figure was designed to appeal specifically to dedicated collectors of the Nickelodeon franchise. Upon its release, it was well-received for its attention to detail, specifically the accurate representation of the character's costume and the inclusion of his classic stern expression, which remains a favorite among fans of the early seasons of the show.
