Where it came from
The Metaluna Mutant Pop figure, numbered 118 in the Pop! Movies line, is based on the iconic extraterrestrial creature from the 1955 science fiction film This Island Earth. As one of the most recognizable designs from the mid-century era of sci-fi cinema, the character is renowned for its oversized, pulsating brain and grotesque features, which were designed by makeup artist Bud Westmore to evoke a sense of alien menace. The figure captures this aesthetic through Funko's signature stylized approach, translating the creature's complex anatomy into the brand's simplified vinyl form.
Released to celebrate classic monster cinema, the figure serves as a tribute to the legacy of Universal Pictures' science fiction output. Funko’s designers aimed to preserve the mutant's distinct silhouette, specifically the exposed cranium and crab-like claws, while adhering to the standard proportions of the Pop! vinyl aesthetic. Upon its release, it was well-received by collectors of both vintage horror memorabilia and modern pop culture figures, recognized as a faithful, miniature representation of a pivotal creature design in the history of special effects.
