Where it came from
The Patrick Star vinyl figure, numbered 917 in the Funko Pop animation series, was produced to commemorate the 2020 release of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. As a prototype version, this item represents the pre-production stage of the manufacturing process, intended for internal quality control and design approval before the mass-market release. These early samples are typically created using unpainted or test-color plastic to evaluate the mold integrity and structural balance of the figure.
The design of this iteration draws from the film's updated CGI aesthetic, which aimed to translate the iconic 2D characters into a high-fidelity 3D environment while retaining their familiar silhouettes. The sculpt reflects the simplified, rounded geometry characteristic of Funko's signature style, adapted to fit the specific textures and expressions featured in the Sponge on the Run movie. While prototypes are not intended for retail, they have become significant artifacts for collectors who value the technical evolution of toy design.
