Where it came from
Released as part of the Funko Pop! Television line, the Sharknado figure represents the 2013 cult television film of the same name. Produced by The Asylum and aired on Syfy, the movie became a viral phenomenon due to its intentionally absurd premise of a waterspout lifting sharks out of the ocean and depositing them into Los Angeles. Funko capitalized on this sudden cultural ubiquity by immortalizing the film's titular disaster in their signature stylized vinyl form.
The design of the figure, numbered 134 in the series, features a shark mid-air caught within a vortex of translucent blue plastic intended to mimic the chaotic weather pattern of the film. Designers at Funko opted for a balance between the company's established aesthetic—notably the enlarged head and simple facial features—and the distinct, tongue-in-cheek horror-comedy tone of the source material. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by fans of the franchise and collectors of niche pop culture memorabilia, serving as a physical memento of the internet-driven hype cycle that defined the mid-2010s.
