Where it came from
Released as a 2020 Emerald City Comic Con exclusive, this Pop! Animation figure depicts the titular protagonist of the seminal 1967 Japanese manga and anime series, Speed Racer. The figure serves as a nod to the show's high-octane racing aesthetics, specifically capturing the character holding the iconic winning trophy. It was produced by Funko to celebrate the enduring legacy of Tatsuo Yoshida's creation, which introduced a generation of Western audiences to Japanese animation.
The design draws inspiration from the character's classic racing attire and the distinct, streamlined art style of the late 1960s anime. Funko opted for a stylized representation that maintains the recognizable visual cues of the original series while adhering to the signature aesthetic of the Pop! line. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by nostalgia-driven collectors who valued the piece as a tribute to one of the earliest global anime sensations.
