Squirtle

Squirtle, a central figure in the Pokémon franchise, was introduced in 1996 as one of the three original starter creatures in the Nintendo Game Boy titles. Designed by Ken Sugimori and his team at Game Freak, the character was conceptualized as a water-type turtle, drawing on both amphibian biology and traditional Japanese folklore representations of the animal. Its transition into the Funko Pop! Games line as item number 504 (notably often associated with various series numbering) reflects the lasting cultural footprint of the original generation of Pokémon, aiming to capture the character's iconic silhouette in Funko's stylized, oversized-head aesthetic.

The Funko interpretation of Squirtle seeks to balance the character's recognizable features—such as its rounded shell and expressive, large eyes—with the specific design constraints of the vinyl figure format. Upon its release, this figure was met with significant enthusiasm from long-term fans and toy collectors alike, serving as a staple within the wider Pokémon-themed vinyl series. It represents a broader trend in pop culture merchandising where the nostalgia of 1990s gaming is synthesized with contemporary collectible trends, maintaining a minimalist yet faithful adherence to the source material's visual identity.
