Where it came from
The Tamatoa (Neon) Pop figure was released as a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive in 2017, representing the villainous giant crab from Disney's 2016 animated feature Moana. The design serves as a stylized, glow-in-the-dark variation of the original Tamatoa figure, intended to capture the character's obsession with shiny, bioluminescent treasures found in his deep-sea lair.
Funko’s design team leaned into the character’s aesthetic by utilizing vibrant, light-reactive pigments that contrast with the standard matte finish of the mainline release. As an event-exclusive item, it was primarily distributed through the SDCC convention floor and shared retail partners, quickly becoming a sought-after piece for collectors of the Moana series due to its limited availability and distinct color palette.
