Where it came from
The Sheriff figure is part of the Pop! Asia series, a line launched by Funko to broaden its international appeal by highlighting regional folklore and pop culture icons from Eastern markets. Released around 2013, this figure draws inspiration from the Jiang Shi, or 'hopping vampire,' a creature prevalent in 1980s Hong Kong horror-comedy cinema, most notably popularized by the 'Mr. Vampire' film franchise.
The design of the figure translates the traditional Qing Dynasty burial attire associated with the Jiang Shi into Funko's signature stylized form. By incorporating the iconic stiff-armed pose and the talismanic yellow paper strip often seen on the creatures' foreheads, the design honors the aesthetic roots of the genre. Upon its release, it became a sought-after piece for collectors of the Pop! Asia line, serving as a distinct cultural outlier within the broader Funko catalog.
