2 Cross Rails, 8 Straight Tracks, 4 Base Plates

Released in 1964 as part of the early LEGO System of Play, this set represents a foundational period in the company's transition toward specialized modular construction. During the mid-1960s, the brand sought to expand beyond basic bricks by introducing functional, mechanical elements that allowed builders to create more dynamic environments. This particular set was designed as a modular track extension, meant to integrate with the nascent train and road systems that were beginning to define the LEGO aesthetic.

The design of these pieces reflects the minimalist, functionalist approach favored by the company during the 1960s, focusing on durability and structural compatibility. The tracks and base plates were engineered to provide a stable, snap-fit foundation for the vehicles of the era. While early sets like this were often sold in basic boxes with minimal branding, they were well-received by consumers for their modularity, establishing the standard geometric tolerances that would eventually characterize the entire LEGO infrastructure for decades to come.
