Where it came from
Released in 2023, the Minifigure Tribute (40504-1) was designed as an exclusive set available only at the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark. It serves as a commemorative piece celebrating the 45th anniversary of the classic LEGO minifigure, which made its debut in 1978. The set is a direct homage to the iconic 6270 Forbidden Island pirate captain, scaled up significantly to feature a brick-built version of the minifigure rather than a traditional small-scale character.
The design process sought to evoke nostalgia by replicating the distinct aesthetics of the vintage pirate minifigure, complete with the classic hook hand and a detailed treasure map accessory. By choosing the Captain Redbeard character, the designers honored one of the most recognizable figures from the 1980s and 90s era of LEGO. Upon its release, the set was well-received by the adult fan community for its thoughtful tribute to brand history and its status as a destination-specific collectible.
