Where it came from
The American flag, specifically the fifty-star configuration codified in 1960, serves as the national emblem of the United States. Its current iteration follows the requirements set forth by the Flag Act of 1818, which established that the number of stars should correspond to the number of states in the Union, while the thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies.
The design of the fifty-star flag was finalized following the admission of Hawaii to the Union in 1959. Robert G. Heft, a high school student from Ohio, famously created the current layout for a class project in 1958. His design was subsequently selected by President Dwight D. Eisenhower from among thousands of submissions, becoming the official national standard on July 4, 1960.
