Where it came from
The 5180 Airport T-Junction and Circle Base Plates set was released in 1980 as part of the wider LEGO Town theme. This accessory pack was designed to provide builders with specialized road segments featuring printed runway markings, reflecting the era's focus on expanding the utility of city layouts through modular infrastructure components.
These base plates were illustrated and engineered to integrate seamlessly with the contemporary airport and plane sets of the late 1970s and early 1980s. By incorporating both a T-junction road and a circular runway section, the design team aimed to help children transition their play from standard road systems to dedicated aviation hubs, a concept that was received as a functional staple for young LEGO city planners during the period.
