Where it came from
The Animal Allies Challenge Kit, released in 2016, was developed as the centerpiece for the FIRST LEGO League season of the same name. These kits were designed specifically for participants aged 9 to 16, providing the physical elements and mission models required to navigate the competition's thematic robotics course. The challenge focused on the intersection of human and animal interaction, tasking teams with building and programming autonomous robots to complete tasks related to animal conservation and welfare.
The physical models were engineered by the LEGO Education team, who prioritized modularity and durability to ensure the sets could withstand rigorous competition use. By utilizing a mix of standard bricks and specialized Technic components, the designers aimed to provide a tactile experience that mirrored real-world engineering challenges. The kits were distributed globally to thousands of registered teams, becoming a staple of STEM educational programming during the 2016 competition season and receiving praise for integrating complex mechanics with accessible, narrative-driven mission sets.
