Where it came from
The Animal Atlas, published by DK in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, was conceived as a comprehensive visual reference guide for younger readers. Developed in the late 2010s as part of DK's long-standing tradition of highly illustrated educational nonfiction, the volume was designed to categorize global wildlife through a mixture of cartography and zoological data. The project aimed to bridge the gap between geography and natural history by mapping habitats alongside detailed animal profiles, utilizing the publisher’s signature style of clean layouts and high-resolution photography.
The design team at DK focused on accessibility and structural clarity to ensure the complex data remained digestible for its target audience. By leveraging the vast archival resources of the Smithsonian, the editors sought to provide accurate, up-to-date information on conservation status and species distribution. Upon release, the book was well-received by educators and parents for its rigorous approach to visual storytelling, becoming a common fixture in school libraries and home collections for its balance of scientific integrity and aesthetic appeal.
