Where it came from
Released in 2014 as part of the LEGO City Arctic subtheme, the Arctic Base Camp (60036-1) was designed to capture the spirit of scientific exploration in extreme environments. The set arrived during a period when LEGO was expanding its City line to include more specialized, expedition-focused narratives beyond standard urban services, tapping into the popular appeal of research stations and heavy-duty vehicles.
The design emphasizes playability through modular architecture, featuring a mobile laboratory, a tracked transport vehicle, and a mobile drilling station. It was crafted by LEGO designers to offer a comprehensive play experience, including numerous minifigures and specialized equipment, and was generally well-received by the building community for its cohesive aesthetic and the inclusion of the then-novel polar bear figure.
