Released in 2012 as part of the Lego Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series, the B-wing Starfighter (10227) was designed to capture the complex, rotating geometry of the Rebel Alliance's heavy assault craft first seen in Return of the Jedi. The set was created to address long-standing fan requests for a large-scale version of the ship, following the release of the smaller system-scale models in previous years.
Lego designer Mads B. Nipper led the development of the set, focusing on the challenge of stabilizing the ship's iconic gyroscopic cockpit and folding S-foils. Upon its release, it was lauded for its impressive scale and intricate structural engineering, which required a significant number of technic elements to support the weight of the asymmetrical wings while remaining faithful to the onscreen silhouette.
