Where it came from
Baby Riyu was introduced to the Lego Ninjago line in 2023, debuting as part of the 'Dragons Rising' story arc. The character serves as a central plot device, representing a rare and powerful young dragon species discovered by the ninja protagonists. Its design reflects a shift toward more stylized, creature-focused elements within the theme, prioritizing a compact and endearing aesthetic that captures the innocence of a hatchling while maintaining the core visual language of the Ninjago world.
The figure was designed to be modular and expressive, often included in various sets to facilitate narrative play. As a new entity in the Ninjago canon, Riyu was developed to bridge the gap between the original elemental dragon lore and the expanded, multi-realm scope of the Dragons Rising series. The reception among fans has been largely positive, with collectors appreciating the character's unique molded head piece and its frequent appearances in affordable sets, which helped integrate the new mascot character into existing collections.
