Where it came from
The Battle at the Ancient Village set was released in 2021 as part of the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes theme. It was designed to coincide with the release of the Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, featuring a buildable Great Protector dragon and a modular village scene. The set was intended to capture a key sequence from the film, emphasizing the mythological aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced in that chapter.
The design of the set focuses on the articulated, serpentine form of the Great Protector dragon, which uses a mix of printed pieces and specialized elements to achieve its distinctive aquatic appearance. It was created by the LEGO design team to offer a play experience that balanced action-oriented features, such as disc shooters, with displayable elements representing the architecture seen in the film. Upon release, it was noted for its departure from traditional urban-based superhero sets, instead leaning into fantasy-inspired aesthetics.
