Where it came from
Blocks magazine was launched as an independent publication dedicated to the LEGO hobby, filling a gap for high-quality, long-form journalism focused on the brick-building community. Issue 35, released in late 2017, arrived during a period of significant growth for the fan community, where the intersection of adult collecting and hobbyist photography became a major focal point for the editorial team. The magazine aimed to bridge the gap between casual builders and serious collectors by providing exclusive interviews, set reviews, and in-depth technical analysis of building techniques.
The editorial direction for this issue was curated by the core Blocks team, who emphasized a clean, sophisticated design aesthetic meant to mirror high-end lifestyle publications. By focusing on the craftsmanship behind custom builds and official set releases, the issue was well-received by readers who appreciated the publication's commitment to community-driven content and professional layout design. It remains a representative artifact of the mid-2010s shift toward treating LEGO building as a legitimate form of creative design and art.
