Where it came from
Released in 1997 as part of the LEGO Scala line, the Blooms and Butterflies set was designed to move away from the traditional interlocking brick experience toward a more decorative and jewelry-focused aesthetic. The Scala theme originated in the late 1970s and was later reimagined in the 1990s to feature articulated figures and accessory-heavy components, aiming to attract a demographic interested in dollhouse play and creative customization.
The set reflects the design philosophy of the mid-90s LEGO era, which sought to diversify its catalog with specialized, non-system-compatible elements. The floral and lepidopteran motifs were intended to offer bright, whimsical play opportunities for children. While the Scala line itself proved divisive among long-term hobbyists who preferred classic system bricks, this particular set remains a representative artifact of the company’s efforts to bridge the gap between building sets and conventional fashion-based dolls.
