Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the Lego Duplo Bob the Builder theme, the Bob at Work set was developed during a period when Lego sought to capitalize on the massive global popularity of the British stop-motion children's television series. Designed specifically for younger builders, the set prioritized large, durable bricks and simple mechanical elements that allowed children to recreate the construction-themed narratives featured in the show.
The figure of Bob was rendered in the signature chunky, rounded style characteristic of the Duplo line, capturing the character’s iconic blue dungarees and hard hat. While the set was criticized by some purists for its reliance on pre-molded specialized pieces, it was warmly received by the target demographic of preschool children and parents who valued its ease of assembly and playability within the broader Duplo construction ecosystem.
